Ushguli is a small village located in the valleys of Svaneti (pronounced "Swan-etia"), the region of Northwestern Georgia. Located at the head of the Enguri Gorge, Ushguli is actually a collection of villages. Ushguli is the highest village in Europe, and is part of the UNESCO Heritage site of Upper Svaneti.
Ushguli is located at the foot of Mt Shkhara which is one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus, and the highest peak in Georgia. Ushguli has been described as a "fairytale" and this description is very acurate! From Ushguli you can drive through the Enguri Gorge. Located in the Enguri Gorge is an amazing abandoned village, Tsana. Note that the road through the Enguri Gorge past Ushguli is very bad and not for the weak of heart.
The Svan defensive towers that are found all throughout Ushguli are also found in the Russian republics of Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, destinations that are, unfortunately, currently too dangerous for tourism.
