Svaneti (pronounced "Swan-eti" so you can look smart) is the historical NorthWest province of Georgia, located high in the Caucasus Mountains close to the border with Russia. Svaneti is populated by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians.
Svaneti is the highest inhabited area of the Caucausus. The highest peak in Georgia, Mount Shkhara, is located in Svaneti, and four of the ten highest peaks in the Caucasus are located in the province.
Svaneti is dominated by rugged mountains reaching into the sky seperated by deep gorges. The province is famous for its many glaciers. The signature peak of Svaneti is Mount Ushba, which can be seen throughout most of the province.
