Shatilis is a highland village on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, in the historic Georgian province of Upper Khevsureti (now modern-day Mtskheta-Mtianeti.) A collection of medieval to early modern fortresses, Shatili served not only as residences but protection for the North Eastern border of the country.

Shatili is located deep in the Anghuri Gorge and is only accessible in the summertime over a 100 kilometre route that takes a minimum of 7 hours. The drive to Shatili, however difficult and at times down right scary, offers some stunning vistas and unbelievable scenery. Once you top over the crest of the gorge and you are heading down towards Shatili, the vegetation and landscape gets stunningly exotic, and it becomes increasingly difficult to believe that people could live in such an isolated location.
