Mount Kazbek is a dormant Stratovolcano that towers over the Kazbegi region and is the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus. Kazbegi is definitely worth a visit. The major attraction of Kazbegi is the Tsminda Sameba (or Gergeti Trinity) Church located high above the small village of Gergeti.
Stepantsminda is the small village located at the foot of Mount Kazbek and is likely where you will stay in the Kazbegi area.
The area around Mount Kazbek was declared a Nature Reserve in 1979 by Soviet authorities. Many species of flora and fauna are endemic to the Caucasus.
